The Team & Role

Our browser engineering group is made up of developers who are passionate about creating a fast, reliable, and intuitive web experience. This team builds and maintains the core features you interact with every day, ensuring they run smoothly, efficiently, and securely. We’re now searching for a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to help shape the future of our AI-powered features and tools. In this role, you’ll contribute to building responsible, safe, and user-centered applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Senior Staff Engineers are recognized leaders in their areas of expertise. They influence product vision across multiple teams, transform high-level goals into coordinated execution, and set technical direction that guides others. A big part of the role also involves mentorship—supporting less experienced engineers as they take on new responsibilities—while working with leadership to build alignment and clarity across the organization.

What you’ll do

• Take ownership of broad, complex challenges and see them through from concept to delivery, partnering closely with designers, engineers, and other stakeholders to improve the web experience.
• Spot high-impact opportunities where large language models can meaningfully enhance the browser experience.
• Lead the creation, deployment, and integration of new AI and machine learning models, working closely with product managers, engineers, and designers.
• Keep pace with the latest research and advances in artificial intelligence, ensuring our solutions stay modern, effective, and forward-looking.
• Share knowledge and provide guidance to the team, helping strengthen overall AI expertise and thought leadership within the organization.

What Skills / Experience You Need

• 8+ years of hands-on experience in machine learning engineering, including designing, training, and deploying models for real-world, user-facing products.
• Direct experience launching large language models or multimodal AI systems into consumer applications.
• Strong foundation in machine learning methods such as deep learning, NLP, reinforcement learning, and advanced LLM architectures, with proven depth in one or more of these areas.
• Ability to recognize complex, high-value problems and work across multiple teams to develop and execute the best solutions.
• Established record of technical leadership, showing success in building and shipping AI products while fostering collaboration, adaptability, and respect for diverse perspectives.
• Familiarity with both open-source AI tools and major cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Background in experimental design, survey development, and large-scale A/B testing.
• Experience building AI systems that prioritize transparency, responsibility, and user needs.
• A pragmatic approach to balancing ambitious innovation with practical timelines, trade-offs, and safeguards.
• Comfortable thriving on a distributed, collaborative team.

Nice to have:

• Background in on-device or edge machine learning.
• Contributions to open-source projects.
• Knowledge of browser ecosystems or architecture.

• Total Comp. approximately $425,000 (Base + Bonus)
